5 Easy Steps to Building a Healthy Salad

Step 1: The Greens—A Delicious Foundation

Use one type of salad greens or combine your favorites for color and flavor

∙ Mixed Greens
∙ Kale
∙ Romaine Lettuce
∙ Red or Green Leaf Lettuce
∙ Baby Spinach

Step 2: Fruits and Vegetables

Combine traditional favorites or create something new and different

∙ Green Beans
∙ Canned Beans
∙ Corn
∙ Mandarin Oranges
∙ Pineapple
∙ Strawberries
∙ Blueberries
∙ Cucumber
∙ Bell Pepper
∙ Cauliflower
∙ Carrots
∙ Apples
∙ Grapes
∙ Oranges


 Step 3: The Crunch

Add some great texture and flavor! Time to be creative.
∙ Pecans
∙ Peanuts
∙ Celery
∙ Radishes

Step 4: Extra Flavor

Sprinkle on a few toppings for a tasty treat. There are lots of choices.

∙ Hard boiled eggs
∙ Cheese
∙ Onions, variety

Step 5: The Dressing

Put it all together
Use no more than 2 Tablespoons
∙ Fresh Squeezed Juice: lemon, lime, orange and grapefruit, salt and pepper
∙ Salsa
∙ Vinaigrette

Spinach Salad

Makes 6 servings

  • 5 cups baby spinach (washed, dried, stems removed)
  • ½ cup strawberries
  • ½ cup pecans
  • ½ cup Balsamic Vinaigrette


  1. Add spinach, strawberries, pecans, and dressing to a large bowl.
  2. Toss to combine.
  3. Serve immediately.
